ItCouldHappen:

At the risk of getting overly personal; in the past month my partner has had kidney failure which will force her onto a transplant list (a non drinking/smoking 30 year old with a freak autoimmune disorder), and my mother had a minor stroke (I joke that I am basically getting to experience all the famous off court Spurs ailments on a personal level… and telling my brother to watch for DVT).

I was with my mom during at the rehab hospital today, and I told her the story about Riis and Pounding the Rock, explaining it through the lens of Pop who I’m sure internalized that quote during his own rehab. There will be sessions, days, weeks, where no improvement happens, but when something finally clicks, it will be all those sessions/days/weeks that led to that moment. I’m sure Pop was thinking that during his rehab, and I’m eternally grateful to be able to pass that on to my mom.

Also this community continues to kick ass. Pound that Rock y’all.

BoneSpurs1987:

Stay strong

ItCouldHappen:

Hah, I’m fine. I’ve had Pop in my ear for damn near 30 years. I’m just glad I can share it with loved ones. That man is truly transformative.

Pete_Sydney:

All my thoughts are with you and your loved ones. I hope you can enjoy some rest and peaceful time over Christmas. “ItCouldHappen” to any of us. Stay strong.

ItCouldHappen:

I love all the well-wishes and appreciate the sympathy. I think both will do well, as long as they Pound the Rock.

(I had a moment of pride when I overheard my mom explain to the PT nurse about Pop and Jacob Riis)

thirtynineyearfanversion2.0:

Thanks for sharing what you and your family are dealing with, and I’m sending some positive thoughts your way. And when it comes to medical issues, you’re right, that same

'pounding the rock" way of thinking about it can definitely be useful. Best wishes to your partner and your mom.

The @ spurs, probably to no surprise the way they’re built, have had seven different leading scorers during their current seven game winning streak:

Barnes: 24 @ NO

Castle: 30 @ LA

Vassell: 23 @ OKC

Harper: 24 vs WAS

Wembanyama: 26 @ ATL

Fox: 27 @ WAS

Johnson: 25 vs OKC#PorVida

Habitus:

I grew up in Turkey and live in NY state (how I became a Spurs fan a quarter century ago is a long story but it has something to do with Spurs culture and cemented by Manu’s arrival later), so I know no other Spur fan.

I used to go to Spurs-Knicks and New Jersey Nets games and see occasional Spur fan when I lived in the city but I cannot do that anymore either. Long story short, we got ourselves an awesome team and this is me sharing my happiness here

ItCouldHappen:

You are my favorite Turk since Hedo. But I hate Alpy.

2yrTimeline:

While Fox and Harper combined for only 10 points, they also combined for 19 assists and zero turnovers. No selfishness there. Just winning, as a team.

Veggiedelite:

Gonna give a shout out to both KJ and Devin here our longest tenured guys that were literally leading the team just a few years ago. The work they’ve put in and the time and money the spurs have invested in them is paying off here. Even as just 4th-5th options having them behind our young stars and solid vets is just invaluable. 42 points from them tonight on good shooting especially KJ. The team just playing great right now top to bottom it’s nearly unbelievable how impressive they’re looking. Hope you all have a nice Christmas Eve will see you on Christmas hopefully another win in our stockings

MElizondo:

I love to see those guys doing well! I’ve said it for years but I can’t wait to see playoff Keldon arrive!!!

ItCouldHappen:

I can’t wait to see championship winning Keldon. Get your seismometers ready.

BrettJones:

This team is feeling more Spurs-y than ever. You never know who’s going to lead in scoring, assists or rebounding. They’re getting the ball to whomever has the hot hand. The two biggest stars had very limited offensive output, but they also didn’t hurt their teams jacking up shots, played smart basketball, racked up assists and affected the game without being the focal point. Makes for an efficient, multi-pronged attack that’s hard to plan for and even harder to stop. With that depth, players have the limited minutes and energy to play elite, high intensity defense for a full 48. Bellisimo.

ItCouldHappen:

Dylan Harper going 2-3 from the field with 10 assists, 0 TOs, and 5 steals is an absolute apex of Spurs basketball.

TwentyFourteen:

Keldon with the most points

Dylan with the most assists

Julian with the most rebounds!

Love how it’s is so egalitarian

Crash TE:

Damn 10 assists zero turnovers and 5 steals is a helluva line. I remember when point guards weren’t expected to score all that much.

spiceymeatball:

What was astonishing to me was our defense. Several times the clock ran out on the Thunder causing turnovers. My big takeaway: one reason we bludgeoned the Thunder is that we have the hosses to physically dominate them at key positions, wing and guards. Harper, physicality of his defense. Castle’s dominating physicality. Even Keldon on defense in this one where he was getting into players’ grills and physically bumping them off their game. Add Champagnie to the mix this game.

And yet again, Vassell doesn’t get enough love around here. Making tough 2 and 3pt shots and playing at a level of defense not seen in prior seasons.

ItCouldHappen:

The Spurs have allowed 108.5 points per game against the Thunder in two games.

This defense is clicking.

pejoweho:

More goodness: Lakers, Nuggets, and Hawks all lost tonight, and the Rockets are currently getting thrashed by the Clippers.

ItCouldHappen:

Clippers winning, Jazz losing, Hawks losing, Thunder losing, Rockets losing, Denver losing, pretty much a perfect night for the Spurs in the asset race against OKC.

Nasty spurs ph:

That Wemby, Champ, Castle, Johnson and Harper line up is what brought OKC to its knees. The defense was nasty. I thought it was the killer line up.

Fkj:

In a game with many impressive aspects our D was the most impressive…

MCRichey:

I know what I want for Christmas!!!

Obi-WanGinobili:

It wasn’t a must, but Barnes dominated Chet. Like, he scored on him in bunches. Was fun to watch.

Spur_Monkey:

Yeah and KJ too.

It was very satisfying to see them bully him under the rim.

Obi-WanGinobili:

Indeed. Kj did inadvertently elbow him, but Chet didn’t get the call because he was flopping around so much throughout the game. Boy who cried wolf stuff

SpinachBoy:

Spurs is the new HERO in the NBA… taking down the Villain OKC.

Out of my NBA buddies/circles, only one guy is a OKC fan, and he was one because of Russell Westbrook. Other than that, most of them dislike OKC…

The Spurs era has finally come, great to be back after 6 years hiatus!!!

ItCouldHappen:

My nephew is an OKC fan… I texted him after the cup game “I hope you enjoyed your title, the next decade is ours”

Veggiedelite:

We should enjoy it. At the trajectory we’re on it’s only a matter of time till we are the hated ones. Nobody likes losing to a team all the time

MElizondo:

I feel like you’re either a fan of OKC or you hate em. Very few are indifferent. Fortunately, seems like the Spurs have become a very likeable team (even moreso than during our championship days).

2yrTimeline:

Not my concern if people like us. Respect is more important.

RaceForSeis:

Ethical

stormchaser4life:

Now we are talking. That game was both mental and physical. The Spurs kept themselves discliplined and drove the ball inside hard. Castle and KJ led the way, tearing holes deep in the OKC defense. I want to say, I’m proud of Harrison Barnes. Finally, he used his body to push and shove his way inside and the result was amazing. You see, he generally sits and waits around the baseline perimeter and jacks up 3 balls (which is cringe lately). When he pushed his way to the basket and laid it up, I jumped up and said, THAT’s WHAT HE SHOULD BE DOING! Changit! Why did it take so long for him to go into beast mode. Now you see the huge difference in his offensive game. That forced OKC to deal with him now and left other players open. Now we have 4 players, who can bully their way inside. The only one who still is timid is Champagnie. But you see, when Harper hit him in the lane, leading to a dunk for Champagnie. There you go! That’s what happens when the whole team is aggressive. Opponents tend to lay off of you. Champagnie needs to do that more often. The result, is the offense opens up, less turnover, more FT’s, and Holmgren winds up with a bloody nose. Thank you KJ. Chet is always hovering over people too close. At some points, OKC even looked desparate to try to keep up, as you saw Dort, sticking his leg out, looking for cheap fouls. There is absolutely no need for that and the League needs to fine him for potentially injuring players, like career ender punk, ZaZa Pachulia. Dort made a lot of 3 balls this game and there is no need to play beneath himself. It’s insulting to him. I’m really surprised that SGA was so efficient once again, as he apparently injured his finger on his shooting hand and still produced. He’s a beast, no doubt. I thought, the big turning point was when the Spurs made an effort to double team him and make the other OKC players produce. That seemed to have worked and we should do something similar the next game. SGA is the head of the snake. Cut off the head and the snake dies. OKC is not as deep as we thought. Great game guys! That’s how you do it! GSG!

BearlyCoherent:

This season is the best Keldon has played in 3-4 years. Has totally embraced & run with the 6th man role.

Castle …. damn. Impressive every which way.

Barnes playing his best since …? Like he found the fountain of youth.

Champagnie - quietly falling into a growing shooting slump …. 27% the last 6, down to 41.7% for the season.

Only DNP …. Sochan? WTF? From a Pop fave to 0 minutes under Mitch. Killing his trade value. Got to be more to the story.

eaglemike:

Team win.

Smart basketball.

Killer instinct and strong defense!

Guys looked very professional, especially the 4th quarter.

KJ, Castle, Harper, Luke, Wemby, JC, DV, Barnes, Fox - they all played solid ball. Limited turnovers and no really stupid fouls.

Neal Poffenberger:

Wow, just wow!

sdowns1470:

This was the best win of the season by far. I didn’t expect a 20 point win against OKC. Keldon, Castle, Barnes, etc were great. This team is ready to compete and it’s young and hungry.

They just sent a message to the rest of the league. They’re here and not going anywhere anytime soon. Our core is 21, 21 and 19 right now. This is the deepest we’ve been in years.

I can’t wait to see more of this on Christmas. I don’t think we win by 20 again though. We are going to be so good. 22-7 on December 23 is so nice.

Fox had a bad game. Victor didn’t have a great game. Both combined for 18 and we won. When was the last time that happened? This was a complete game for our guys tonight.

#GoSpursGo

eaglemike:

IMHO they may not all have had great stat’s, but they all played smart ball.

Limited fouls, limited turnovers, solid defense, enough depth to wear them down.

Remember when Pop told the Spurs how to defend Harden? Similar thing tonight against SGA. Don’t reach, stay down, play strong. Result - win.

Fkj:

We keep stacking up these " best wins" of the season

Spur_Monkey:

I don’t think Fox had a bad game, he just didn’t need to be the most dominant scorer.

This is something I’m seeing on this team, and I think it’s what is the secret to their success… is that everyone has their turn.

On any given night any of the main 8 rotation can be a top scorer.

Fox I’m seeing with a lot of humble intelligence… if he doesn’t have the hot hand, and doesn’t need to, he will defer.

9 assists, and using a lot of gravity to create space for other players, is not a bad game imo.

ItCouldHappen:

I think Fox’s presence allows Castle to do Castle things. I haven’t checked the past two games, but as far as I know, Mitch hasn’t played Castle without Fox or Harper for more than 5 minutes since he’s returned from his injury. Castle is more than capable of being a point of attack guy on offense, but his efficiency goes way up when he has that safety valve behind him.

doggydogworld:

9 assists with 0 turnovers for Fox.

In the same vein, Dylan only scored 4 points but had 10 assists and 0 TOs. And 5 steals.

Spur_Monkey:

Similarly Victor’s box-score show not much happening.

Yet he completely closed the paint to OKC in his minutes on the court allowing the lead to stretch by shutting down easy buckets.

older not wiser:

Wow wow wow. Just watched on delay. The defense. Smart, disciplined. Impressive. So satisfying.

IowaNice:

In a callback to Devon Birdsong’s piece, this would be the game where we are the proudest of proud parents. GSG!
